Why Food Companies are Turning to HPP Packaging

Posted by rhelmke on Food Packaging | Monday, April 10th, 2017 | 0 comments

High pressure processing (HPP) — also known as high hydrostatic pressure (HHP) or ultra-high pressure (UHP) processing — is quickly rising in popularity within the food packaging industry. How Does HPP Packaging Work? HPP subjects a food — liquid or solid — to pressure levels between 100 and 800 megapascal (MPa) and a temperature between 5°C (41°F) or below and 15°C (59°F) or above. Unlike homogenization, HPP achieves decompression by expanding the compressed food against a constraining liquid, thereby reducing the food’s temperature and bringing it toward its original value. Market Trends and Stats Food retailers and brand owners alike are increasingly turning to HPP packaging rather than retorting and aseptic packaging — a trend that is expected to continue. One report, “Global High-Pressure Processing Market: Trends Analysis & Forecasts to 2021,” published by Infinium, predicts that HPP packaging will make up $1.1 billion of the food packaging market within the next five years. Another study, “High-Pressure Processing Equipment Market – Global Trend and Forecast to 2022,” predicts an annual 11.26% growth rate. This study identified several key drivers of...

Packaging standards are constantly evolving to provide consumers with the safest, most secure products possible. At Plastic Ingenuity, we are committed to educating ourselves on the latest packaging specifications across various industries. Here, we’ve outlined explanations of packaging standards for three different product types: food, medical and retail. Consult with our list to determine what to discuss with your packaging company for your specific products. Food Packaging: SQF Standards The Safe Quality Food, or SQF, standard is a Global Food Safety-endorsed initiative designed to produce consistent food safety for consumers. This standard utilizes food safety controls and quality management systems. When looking for a packaging company, seek one that is SQF-certified to ensure all food products are safe to consume. SQF-certified packaging companies offer complete traceability from start to finish of your products’ packaging production. Every step of the process is documented, including the material selection, regrinding phases, and final cooling. With packaging audited through an outside service, discrepancies could occur, or the packaging could become contaminated or unsanitary during transportation. Additionally, the SQF standard provides a measure of quality...

Clamshell Packaging for the Food Industry

Posted by admin on Food Packaging | Tuesday, August 12th, 2014 | 0 comments

Many companies in the food industry choose clamshell designs for their numerous advantages, including exceptional food protection, lower production costs, and much more. At Plastic Ingenuity, we’ve helped both food companies and restaurants develop the packaging they need for their products. Examine the benefits of clamshell packaging for the food industry. Food Protection Food products need to be properly protected to remain in a sanitary condition. Retail food items have their own unique challenges to meet—if food products are not packaged properly, they may grow mold and become unsanitary to eat.  To-go containers for restaurants also need designs that offer protection and resist outside contamination. Clamshell packaging keeps products fresh and secure from tampering—excellent for ready-to-eat food options, as well as for storing food in to-go containers. Easy Accessibility When customers are trying to open their food packaging containers, they will not want to spend additional time doing so. Therefore, packaging designs that have high levels of tamper resistance and take considerable effort to open, such as blister packaging, are not ideal for food products. Although clamshell packaging keeps food...

Study Notes Benefits of Plastic Packaging

Posted by rhelmke on Custom Packaging | Tuesday, June 3rd, 2014 | 1 comments

A new study sponsored by The American Chemistry Council (ACC) and the Canadian Plastics Industry Association has revealed that plastic packaging has significant benefits over other packaging alternatives. The study, titled “Impact of Plastics Packaging on Life Cycle Energy Consumption and Greenhouse Gas Emissions in the United States and Canada,” revealed that plastic packaging could actually reduce greenhouse gas emissions and total energy use compared to other packaging options created with substitute materials. The Packaging Study’s Results The study examined various plastic products, including beverage containers, caps, closures, shrink wrap, rigid containers, shopping bags and other types of packaging solutions. Those conducting the study used life cycle assessment methodology as they compared plastic packaging to substitute materials. After analyzing the life cycle value of six major plastic packaging options throughout the United States and Canada, the study found that plastics produce a lower weight compared to alternatives, which, in turn, results in reduced energy and greenhouse gas emissions. Comparing the Impact of Plastic Packaging and Its Alternatives According to Plastic Packaging Facts, plastic packaging substitutes weighed 348 percent more than...

We know how much consumers like products in transparent packaging. Now, the team at Capri Sun realizes that, too. After customers were telling story after story claiming they found mold in the beverage containers, Kraft, the parent company of the children’s beverage line, announced the beverages would now come with clear bottoms for increased transparency, both literally and figuratively. The company’s new line of packaging comes with a new tagline, too—“See the goodness before it’s gulped.” This recent campaign shows the company is committed to providing quality products for customers. If your company is contemplating the switch to clear plastic packaging for your products, now’s an ideal time to make the transition. Increased visibility can translate to increased user interest and, ultimately, sales. Benefits of Transparent Plastic Packaging for Food Products While Kraft created Capri Sun’s new packaging design in part to dispel any notion that its beverages are spoiled, the change was a smart move anyway. Consumers want to be assured the food they are eating is fresh and hasn’t been tampered with, and transparent packaging can provide that....
