Cross Plains, WI: Plastic Ingenuity continues to develop sustainable packaging solutions by utilizing Post-Consumer PET in some of its plastic packaging applications. This gives customers another viable option when making earth friendly packaging choices.
When discussing Post-Consumer PET, or RPET, an important consideration to understand is the distinction between Post-Consumer PET and Post-Industrial PET.
Post-Consumer PET derives from the bottle flake of recycled plastic bottles, and generally has a green tint, but can be clear as well. Currently, bottle flake is the predominant Post-Consumer PET that is recycled. In-house recycling of PET at plastic processors is classified as Post-Industrial PET.
There is typically, but not always, an increased cost associated with RPET material, but from a customer standpoint, the benefits outweigh the cost. The idea of a sustainable package that has similar design and thermoforming considerations to conventional PET is a significant advantage RPET has over some of the corn based plastics like PLA or PSM in some cases.
With several retail customers already using RPET, Plastic Ingenuity has branched out and began Post-Consumer R&D work with various medical companies looking for sustainable packaging. The clarity of RPET is one of its assets, which is often a medical packaging requirement.
The implementation of Post-Consumer PET is a continuing development at Plastic Ingenuity, and yet another example of “Green Ingenuity” at work. Plastic Ingenuity has been a national leader in the light gauge custom thermoforming industry since 1972, and continues to pace the industry with its unparalleled innovation and R&D.
