How Thermoforming Works
After a design has been selected for the packaging, a custom mold is constructed for the project.
The mold is typically designed to fit snugly around the product in order to minimize shifting or damage inside the package. Depending on the contents that are in need of protection, thin gauge thermoforming plastic is heated and then stretched tightly over the mold. For a higher degree of detail, vacuum thermoform processes are often used to shape the plastic more completely to the mold. As the plastic sheet cools, it retains the shape of the mold. The packaging is then trimmed and assembled in order to produce custom plastic packaging.
Light Gauge Thermoforming
Also known as thin gauge thermoforming, light gauge thermoforming uses a thinner, more flexible plastic sheet in order to offer more versatility to designers and commercial manufacturers.
Light gauge plastic sheets are 1.5 mm or less in thickness, making them exceptionally useful for clear plastic packaging. This type of thermoform process can also be performed with extruded plastics; however, plastic sheeting usually provides far more uniform results for the finished products.
