Mobile phone product packaging poses unique challenges, particularly for low-cost phones. Plastic Ingenuity created a custom packaging solution that was both cost-efficient and highly sophisticated.
TracFone specializes in affordable cell phones with pay-as-you-go plans, and needed clamshell packaging that embodied its user-friendly image. As is often the case with small electronics in a retail environment, though, the product packaging had to display the phone while deterring tampering and theft in-store.
Plastic Ingenuity selected PETG for the body of the clamshell container. This perfectly clear, highly impact-resistant material is frequently used for electronic packages like this one—it is secure without sacrificing visibility. While PETG clamshell packaging can be tightly sealed around all edges, that heavy duty style of security would not embrace TracFone’s user-friendly philosophy, so PI created a new solution.
This custom packaging sports an easy-open feature that uses two pull tabs, and during the thermoforming process, it is specially sealed to maintain its security. This is accomplished using a special tamper-evident packaging measure. During thermoforming, PI identifies the perforation in the clamshell’s flange. The machine then creates several strategically-located seals around the product packaging. Those seals are positioned so when the consumer uses the pull tabs to open the package, they have the right amount of leverage to easily pop them open. When they do, it makes a highly audible noise and noticeably breaks the plastic seals. The clamshell packaging can’t be reclosed, and opening it is conspicuous both during the actual process and afterward. Ultimately, it combines TracFone’s user-friendly style with a high-security, tamper-evident design.
