Packaging Durability In Your Product Packaging
Choosing a packaging material for your product is more than a matter of picking out good-looking plastic. The durability of your packaging should be as big a concern as its aesthetics, because plastics vary widely when it comes to strength. While some bend, others break. While some splinter and crack, others tear. So while malleability, price and shelf appeal all matter, so does the product packaging’s ability to securely hold your product.
Malleable and Strong
Some types of plastic are lightweight, versatile and strong. One example is PET packaging, which is perhaps most commonly seen in the form of water and soda bottles. This clear, lightweight plastic has a lot of give, which you can see firsthand when you squeeze a bottle of water.
Hard and Brittle
Other materials are harder and more brittle, so while they have high impact resistance, they can’t necessarily bend. An example that most people have experience with is the CD jewel case, which is rigid and can survive drops, but will crack, splinter and break apart when bent.
Some plastics aren’t meant to be brittle, but can become so if they aren’t treated properly. When a plastic manufacturer works with CPET, for example, the crystallization process makes it safe to use in the oven or microwave. If it’s crystallized too much, though, it becomes brittle and may shatter.
