Packaging standards are constantly evolving to provide consumers with the safest, most secure products possible. At Plastic Ingenuity, we are committed to educating ourselves on the latest packaging specifications across various industries. Here, we’ve outlined explanations of packaging standards for three different product types: food, medical and retail. Consult with our list to determine what to discuss with your packaging company for your specific products.

Food Packaging: SQF Standards

The Safe Quality Food, or SQF, standard is a Global Food Safety-endorsed initiative designed to produce consistent food safety for consumers. This standard utilizes food safety controls and quality management systems. When looking for a packaging company, seek one that is SQF-certified to ensure all food products are safe to consume. SQF-certified packaging companies offer complete traceability from start to finish of your products’ packaging production. Every step of the process is documented, including the material selection, regrinding phases, and final cooling. With packaging audited through an outside service, discrepancies could occur, or the packaging could become contaminated or unsanitary during transportation. Additionally, the SQF standard provides a measure of quality control throughout production. When your packaging company can run SQF audits, you won’t have to worry about any inconsistencies. All of the SQF packaging specifications can also increase trust with consumers. Because they know your company is dedicated to producing safe food packaging, they may be more likely to purchase your products.

Medical and Pharmaceutical Packaging: Clean Room Packaging

When searching for a packaging company for your medical or pharmaceutical products, look for one that adheres to a variety of specifications. Your packaging should be processed in an ISO 9001: 2000-certified clean room facility. Clean rooms should feature positive pressure HVAC systems with HEPA filtration. Additionally, clean rooms should have proprietary trimming systems, as well as an experienced staff with experience in medical packaging environments, to support sanitary processes. Medical and pharmaceutical packaging, including diabetes tests kits, unit dose packs, material handling trays, surgical tool trays, implantable medical device trays, and orthodontic packaging, require processing in clean room areas to ensure sterility and sanitation.

Retail: Tamper-Resistant Designs

While retail packaging doesn’t have as specific packaging standards as do food and medical packaging, companies must still be conscious of other considerations. Retail products must be packaged in designs that provide protection during the shipping process, as well as from any outside tampering that may occur in stores. Blister packs are a sleek solution for securing products in retail settings. Products like cellular phones, batteries and other electronics, as well as health and beauty items, are often packaged in clamshells or two piece designs for exceptional protection. Clear blister packaging designs allow consumers to examine the products, yet they still create a tight seal that cannot be broken without some kind of cutting device. Additionally, blister packs and clamshells are attractive and can be customized for product differentiation with the use of a graphics card.
